What are 10 things people don't know about you?

Wow! Tall order! OK, here goes:

  1. My backstage nickname is Crash.
  2. My favorite place on a rainy day is an antique store.
  3. I make jewelry - keep an eye out someday for a website!
  4. My paternal great-great-uncle was Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's first Vice President.
  5. My maternal great-grandfather was the lead cornet player for John Phillip Sousa's marching band.
  6. I'm not a good cook, but I'm a great eater.
  7. The movie "The Dark Crystal" inspired me to want to become a puppeteer.
  8. I'm a good body-surfer.
  9. I sang tenor in the high school choir.
  10. I used to play trombone in and sing for a short-lived traditional jazz band called "The Squabble Hill Backyard Stompers"

Do you have a favorite restaurant?

Lupa on Thompson St. (between Houston and Bleeker) never lets me down. I just had a great meal at Taboon on 52nd and 10th Avenue. I wish I had more time to explore all the amazing restaurants in this city. I also wish I had more friends with a bigger budget, so they can splurge along with me!

I read that Oprah said "You stole the show" (Good Morning America interview).

(Laughing) It is a great feeling. I never thought I would meet Oprah. I always watched her show, and never dreamed I would be playing her role on Broadway. It is very exciting!

It must be. Define "Hell, No".

It is a freeing song for women. It is the message of freedom. When I sing "Hell, No" I am singing as Felicia, not Sophia. I would never let a man hit me. Women need to stand up and not take it.

Congratulations on your performance in Jersey Boys. How does it feel to be part of a production that has become an overnight success?

When I read the script to prepare for the audition, I knew Jersey Boys had the potential to be a huge success. The songs were already great, but the story was great, too. And neither compromised the other. You can be an actor in this show without for a second trudging through some inane scene that's just the excuse for the next song. It's the story of a band, and a fascinating story to be a part of. The fact that audiences are now having the same reaction to the show as I did to the script way back before even the first rehearsal is an amazing and satisfying feeling.

What are 10 things you like about Broadway?

  1. It's all live, so the performance you are seeing will never be quite the same performance as the other.
  2. The music is live.
  3. Musicals that have a strong story with characters to whom I relate, told by song as well as dialogue.
  4. Sondheim.
  5. Harold Prince.
  6. Great current stars like Patti LuPone, Audra MacDonald, Bernadette Peters, Harvey Fierstein and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
  7. Great classic stars like Carol Channing, Chita Rivera, Ethel Merman and Yul Brynner.
  8. Great production design that compliments and fuses with the material, like the contemporary work of Bob Crowley and classic sets by Boris Aronson.
  9. The big beautifully-designed theatres.
  10. The modern great playwrights like Edward Albee, Tom Stoppard, John Patrick Shanley, Charles Busch and David Mamet.

What are your top ten favorite places to go in NYC?

  1. Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. I knew about it even before Angels in America.
  2. Jack's 99 cent stores. The best bargains in town, and upstairs there's a more upscale level ($1.99 and up).
  3. The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. That's where I've been guest appearing in staged readings of Showgirls. It's amazing to see all the zany comics working out their routines before fame hits.
  4. The Enchilada (on 12th Street). The best budget Mexican food in town. You may have noticed by now that I'm a little on the cheap side.
  5. The Central Park Zoo. The alpaca is so cute! Even the pigs aren't that bad.
  6. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. A wonderland that melts my cynicism every time.
  7. The set of Theater Talk. The highlight of any season for me is discussing it all with Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel and letting the barbs and observations fly.
  8. The outdoor market on 17th Street. Fresh produce that's delicious and - you guessed it - inexpensive.
  9. The Village Voice. What fun to have a job, especially one you enjoy.
  10. A theater - any theater! (Except the one where In My Life is playing.)
