Corine Cohen: When did you decide you wanted to become an actor?
Heath Calvert: My mother would pull me away from GI Joe combat to come sing by the piano when I was four. So, music has always been a part of my life. Although, I enjoy it a lot more now then I did then. I'd moved around a lot as a kid and teenager, almost every three years. We all try to find something that we're good at and enjoy. It seemed like I could always find my place in music and performing whenever I ended up in a new place. I don't think it was ever a conscious decision. It was always something that I loved, and assumed I would continue doing.
You have played everything from a sperm in Swimming Upstream
to a planet explorer in Wild Women of Wongo. What inspires you?
Ha. I just like to keep myself busy. It's nice to mix things up.
This summer I've done a lot of whacky/absurd humor. Funny that
most of my work in college was dark and serious. I'd like to tackle
something a little bit more serious next. I think I'm just inspired
by the other actors working around me. It's great to work with
talented people...everyday you take away something valuable.
Good Vibrations was your first Broadway Show. If you could
perform in any current Broadway show, what role would it be and
why? I could see you as Link in Hairspray. Have you ever thought
of that?
Good Vibrations was a fun learning experience. I made a lot of
great friends, a few I actually worked with this summer at the
Fringe and NYMF. What role would it be? I actually don't know.
In the ideal situation, I'd be able to create something of my
own. I haven't actually seen Hairspray yet, so I can't answer
that. I've been drawn to the great plays that are running now.
I've done standing room at Pillowman twice now. So great.
What is your favorite thing about Manhattan?
I've been here two years this month, and I'm constantly finding
new things that I love. I love the fall. I have great memories
of my first few months here...I joined the Met Museum with a birthday
check from my grandparents. It was great to pick a room every
few days and just sit, stare, and try to imagine what the artist
was thinking. I love being able to find and do whatever I want.
Do you have any other passions other than Museums and Theater?
Oh Gee. It varies, depending on the season. I like to take advantage
of all the museums and random performances around the city. It's
so hard to just keep up with my friends. I'm trying to get into
photography. I'm constantly running in different directions.
